Performance

Olivier Garcin
Performer:
Olivier Garcin
Theoretical background:

Olivier Garcin’s work intrigues, it is undoubtadly part of the art scence, in Nice and a bit elsewhere in 1984 (he participated in the « attention fresh paint » cycle at the GAC of the muséums of Nice and at the inaugural exhibition of the CNAC Villa Arson « writings in paintings » but without painting. His « produced objects » are very « atypical » in a context where painting dominates, his friends at the Studio welcome him to find him a place).

Description:

- at “the studio”:
First, there is an installation made of:
- a hanging of colorful dry pastel drawings, projecting on the paper “mental images” of the body made in the dark in his studio,
- a typed text hung with pastels “when I walk,”
- lit up neon lights set on the floor the length of the walls hanging stuff, emphasizing the lines separating horizontal and vertical,
- a large movie screen,
- a table supporting two “carrousel Kodak” slide projectors facing the screen,
- a stereo sound broadcasting device

For Olivier Garcin, the performance consists of welcoming the public while dressed in black and white, white-gloved hands with assembly gloves for the movies and installing it in the room ; the room full, Olivier Garcin heads towards the technical table, launches the broadcasting of the sound room and projects 180 photographs of landscapes produced during his recent professional artistic travels (Senegal, Gambia, Morocco, Paris, the Southwest of France, Grenoble, Monpellier…). The series of photographs exhausted/run out, the sound continues to loop and then the audience can linger before the drawings, the text and the pot of friendship.
