Children are forbidden to play in the building’s hallway – de France Delville (excerpts)
“...The word as an action, as a practice, the word generator of events, of works, of other words, in the open system that is art, it is Mas that says so, the word as an object that falls on your head, and that you hear it sound as if for the first time. He is going to get the words nesting in the stairwell corners...Jean Mas is the troublemaker in the Ecole de Nice, already so percussive. With his “takes” in the most daily of daily life, he holds up to us a funny mirror...”
Allocution PerforMas (excerpts):
Here I am facing all these things: signs, words I sometimes fancy calling my “takes.” Mistake that never enters the ear, if it isn’t to highlight the meaning of a text and a situation evoked by the written or special medium. My takes; medicine, drugs, but more precisely “space of place” that I attend to, that I treat by offering an escape. The approach could be semiological: science of all meanings, it joins taxonomy which would ensure the classifying that the meaningful division implicates.
The psychoanalytical approach.
It will be pertinent each time to suggest and highlight the emergence of something unspoken, of a polysemy, of a rapport structuring meaning in what we call discourse of the unconscious.
The artistic approach.
The Artistic blurredness, the style, syntagm and paradigm. Laying claim to an artistic approach: the creator of words.
I find it necessary to now question what can constitute “square one” of a work, that is to say, defining an assembly of data that authorizes a tilting over in the artistic field.
The intervention of a third (artist) is indispensable. He becomes the game master, playing with a bait, that of a metalanguage that he will produce from his position as an artist.
The artist, here Jean Mas, is a creator looks, and it is by his choice to cut off a part of the world that he organizes next, that is act of creation is built.
Creating looks, it is to engender a mode of original reading, it is to broaden the field of perception. The master of the look will be that which, in giving it sight, allows it to understand...
