Ben takes a dictionary and starts skimming. He puts his finger on a random word. He declares it a work of art. In 1966, he proposes a variation of this gesture at the Galerie A: “A desk containing several large Larousse dictionaries, pencils, sheets of white paper with the following texte printed at the bottom: ‘Declared a work of art.’ A sign above the desk asks those present to open the Larousse dictionnaries to any page, take any random definition, and write it on the white sheet.”
