Theoretical background:

Georges Osterman developed an approach of formal and poetic reflection that opposes the notions of “ego” and listable individuality (“this is a recognizable X”) so strongly advocated for in the art world. “But art is accessible to all,” Osterman contends, “just give it a shape.” This is what he invents by painting paintings on “anonymous” media (bed sheets, printed newspapers, all non-noble media). The height of his attitude affirms itself in the work of creation that he led in his vocational school classes in the Avignon region. During the opening of his exhibition, the public is invited to take up brushes and cans of water colors to produce pieces live alongside him by systematically reproducing the same action. This art of an attitude of productiveness is a response to the formalism of Supports/Surfaces members and of Group 70, which never learned how to “free” themselves from their formalistic “Me.”

Description:

Georges Osterman creates a series of paintings live in a mechanic manner. The public is invited to participate. It’s the collective spirit that prevails then, since the figure of the artist tends to disappear. The paintings are thus signed “Anonym’art” (artist  + public).
