Description:
The discovery near the place Masséna in Nice (avenue Albert 1er) of a heap of gravel mixed with tar inspired Venet to have himself photographed in a context which he was familiar with, as if he were doing a transient performance. He became aware that day of the obvious relation between the tar paintings he had been creating in his studio and this heap of gravel soaked with tar, which could be endowed with the status of a sculpture. Coal Heap was the direct consequence of this. It is interesting to notice the gestures used to create Coal Heap, and to compare them to Richard Serra's gestures when he created Splashing in 1968.
