The ground is made of sand, soil and gravel. Folding chairs are already lined up on the wooden floor. They are facing a real elevated stage. A handful of spectators are waiting, looking the other way; a concert. Using the silence. The love letter curtain will be hung between the installation and the chairs. Frontier between oneself and the other, a hiding place. A white canvas square will merely be placed on the ground. It will be used as a stage. A blue canvas\/article of clothing and another red one, spread out nearby, also on the floor. A blackboard on a stand is placed to the left of the stage square, with pieces of chalk. A pair of scissors, makeup remover, a bottle of nail polish remover, a pile of canvas squares, hidden. Everything is ready.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAction:\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere was no announcement. The program didn\u2019t announce a performance. Maybe it was nap time. It was hot. It was in the shade in the reddish glow of the tent. I started with two, three people who were \u0022resting\u0022 on the chairs. The audience came nearer, grew little by little and very soon started participating. Chairs started turning towards me, the rows took shape again. The action was completely silent. Perhaps it would be necessary to say a few words to some. Everything started with the letters. Progressively I cut the sewn threads, took a letter and gave it. Many letters were handed out. Children cried out for them. People came close and asked. People started reading these intimate pages. The letters could have been written by any one of them, one day, in love, whatever generation. They told me later. Once the letters were handed out, the \u0022curtain\u0022 between the audience and I was opened. The blackboard was brought underneath what was still hanging. With the chalk I wrote a long list of action verbs, all starting with \u201cD\u00e9\u201d (\u201cun\u201d), like \u201cd\u00e9faire, d\u00e9placer\u201d (undo, move elsewhere)... I erased regularly, taking care to leave the squares, the canvas rags, on the floor. Hand imprints were drawn on the fabric. A primitive reminder of art. The origin of signs. The list of verbs was used up. I put the blackboard (wiped clean) towards the back of the space. I came back with a first series of \u201cquestionnaires\u201d: \u0022how do you feel about me...\u0022 that I handed out to the public. Then I finally proceeded to removing the makeup. Started with the red nail polish and nail polish remover. I used squares of empty canvas like micro paintings. Color marked the rags. They were spread out, arranged on the ground, little by little. Then came the face. I used makeup remover on the skin. I used the marked rags delicately to create several \u0022imprints\u0022 on the canvas, which became progressively more and more invisible. \u0022Shrouds\u0022 and \u201cVeronica\u0027s veils\u0022 were put next to the other imprinted canvas squares. They were exhibiting themselves on the ground.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThen I distributed a second \u0022questionnaire\u0022: \u0022what are you doing here...\u0022. The audience played along. They watched and wrote comments. There was now a crowd.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI walked towards the big canvas square on the ground, my \u0022stage\u0022. I sat down on it and slowly removed the fastenings of my clothes. Now I was nude. I stood up and carefully arranged the piece of clothing in a flat rectangle. I walked towards the blue canvas\/piece of clothing on the ground. I slipped it over my head and was dressed once again. It was over.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EA series of actions with Jacques:\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAfter that, people going back \u201c outside \u201c came face to face with Jacques Mi\u00e8ge who was also doing his \u201c sentimental \u201c action. He was simply offering a red rose. But before giving it, he would put it through a mixer and wrap it in a plastic bag. Then he offered \u201chis\u201d rose to the ladies... the concert that we were waiting for started during my performance and then stopped very quickly. The audience followed my action in silence. The questionnaires were handed back filled in. In the evening one could still see people reading my letters.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EConclusion: I still think this piece of work was both crazy and true. No regrets. I\u0027ve always felt like going back to Lantosque. I\u0027d like to know if any memory has remained of this action.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMemory or distorted reality. To see this village again, to make inquiries: this idea remains inside me. To knock on doors, to talk to people. To ask if there are still any letters, somewhere, hidden, in a drawer. Perhaps the story has been transmitted, distorted. I find this performance touching and pure. The main thing is the experience that we lived through. Only life counts. A \u201cwork of art\u0022 is like a plant that grows, becomes bigger, dies or gives fruit, slowly, slowly. It works with and on time, through every moment of the present. I believe in the butterfly effect. Something insignificant can change a lot. An accident! Art crossing one\u0027s path, like the beginning of a love story. Creation and the state of being in love are the same thing, are similar. It never stops.
