The garden before the wind picks up

Creator:
Doohwa Gianton
Performer:
Doohwa Gianton
Theoretical background:
The tunnel is seen as a theatrical passageway, between the physical world, from each side of the looking glass, and the oniric world, from the secret garden of the fables to reality. Spectators follow the artist, leading them from a scenic place to another, in a dynamic progression towards light.

Let’s follow the wind, it can take us back to our memories.
Listen to the sound of the garden calling the wind.
Green enlightens the night under its rust-stained memory.
Flowers blossom whenever the wind weakens.

Two hundred spectators follow the successive scenes and cross the tunnel.

Description:
The performance takes place around a disused railway tunnel connecting the Cap d’Ail to Monaco. This tunnel is 5,70 m high and 4,90 m wide. The crossing takes about 5 mns on foot. The floor is made of gravel. The place is dark and disquieting. Once the tunnel crossed, the wind and the sun can be felt. I considered the tunnel as a sort of a secret garden, a passage through the looking glass.
Eight scenes take place in the tunnel:

1. Across the tunnel entrance, a clothes line, representing a curtain. This wire is fixed to a metal structure on which are hung clear plastic gloves filled with water. A little girl dressed in white plays the violin inside the structure (Ode to Joy).
While the little girl is playing, I hang some clothes on the line and then I wrap myself in a white cloth, and I enter the tunnel. The little girl follows me, improvising a tune.
2. A few meters from the entrance a white cloth is installed on the floor, with three buckets of rose petals displaying three different colors. I scatter the petals on the cloth, as the wind would.
3. I advance further into the tunnel, releasing partitions scores as if the wind carried them away.
4. Further on is a table on which are placed a Bible and a bottle of red wine. I drink a sip and I read a page of the Bible, opened at random. I tear this page off and eat it.
5. I progress, as it gets darker and darker, until a cage where two hens are locked, five eggs on the floor. (A small lamp sheds some light on the hens). I ask the hen who was there first, the egg or her? I break an egg.
6. Always followed by the girl with the violin (playing Under the spell), I continue my progression to the darkest corner of the tunnel in which twelve fiberglass flowers (on batteries) are set in a circle. At the centre of the circle is a metal structure which represents a tree on which are hung clear plastic gloves filled with water. As soon as I arrive, I turn on the "black light" lights I’ m wearing, and I dance, highlighting the colored spots that are on the costumes and the gravel floor.
7. Further, in a place of the tunnel where water drips through infiltration, a transparent plastic sheet is set. The noise of drops in the handmade basin can be heard. Singing a child song, I fold a paper boat that I put on the water.
8. Across the tunnel exit, a wire is stretched, on either side of which, two sheets of clear plastic are hung, representing the passage of light and that of the wind. An apple is also hung on it. The little girl plays Shetland, I take the apple, I get out of the tunnel, heading towards the street.

Music composed by Hayashi Kchiro and Aurore.
