Bacterial Voice Epidemic

Description:

Facing the microphone, dimly lit, in a suit and tie, Joël Hubaut breathes into a paper bag. A faint hiss escapes from a wind instrument concealed within.

Sequence two: He makes stifled moans, punctuated by sharp screeching, while methodically eating a banana.

Sequence three: Holding a cigar on which he puffs now and then, he begins to talk and sing in a frenetic babble, pinches his nose, grimaces. The accompanying industrial band Déficit des Années Antérieures blares loudly. Joël Hubaut picks up a guitar, hops compulsively, turns and rocks on the base of the mike. Uncoordinated gestures, trance to match the disquieting musical layers. He dons sunglasses and on the wall behind the stage spray paints the word ‘épidémia’ and a grid. The electronic music fades and the band intones a dissonant, a capella version of the Beatles song Revolution. Joël Hubaut marks an alphabet in the grid. The lead singer’s legs are covered in the kabbalistic symbols typical of the artist. He sprays “C.K.K.E.” and “Nice.”

Sequence four: He holds an enormous black dog on a leash, exhorting and provoking the audience by screaming in an unknown language. He slips on dark sunglasses again. The light slowly dims, the cries of rage continue, the dog starts barking.
